A curious mind.
A builder at heart.
I’m André Machado, a software engineer from Lisbon. I build things for the web, work with Linux and UNIX, and write about the ideas that keep me curious.
01The short version
It started with “how does this work?”
A childhood fascination with computers became years of tinkering, learning, and building. That curiosity still shapes how I work: understand the foundations, ask better questions, and make something useful.
Born and raised in Lisbon, I care about technology’s ability to connect people. I want the software I build to be accessible, understandable, and useful in everyday life.
I’ve been freelancing and learning through open source since 2016. This website is where I share that work, alongside notes on philosophy and being human.
02What I work on
- The web, with care.
Semantic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Fast, accessible websites built on solid fundamentals and progressive enhancement.
- Closer to the machine.
Systems programming, Linux and UNIX, shell scripting, and understanding how software meets hardware.
- Software that lasts.
Simple architecture, readable code, and tools that people can maintain and build upon.
- Built in the open.
Open source projects, shared knowledge, and useful tools shaped by the communities around them.
03A few principles
Keep it simple. Keep it open.
I’m drawn to the UNIX philosophy: do one thing and do it well. Small, focused tools that work together often solve a problem more gracefully than a complicated system.
I value privacy, software freedom, and accessibility. People should be able to understand and control the technology they use, and good software should welcome everyone.
Tools change. Clear thinking, curiosity, and the willingness to share what you know tend to last.
04Away from the keyboard
There’s a world beyond the screen.
I read philosophy, computer science, and literature. I’m especially interested in how technology changes society, and how philosophical questions shape the way we live.
Some of that reading finds its way into my writing. The rest comes along on long walks through Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods, where there’s always something to notice.
Recurring interests: open knowledge, the philosophy of technology,
good books, and questions without easy answers.
05Say hello
Good conversations start somewhere.
Have a project in mind, an open source idea, or a book I should read? I’d be happy to hear from you.
